The Green Smoothie Diet and Juice Fasting Craze! Healthy or Hype?
Each week I review articles in four categories: fat loss, nutrition, strength training and health and wellness, giving you the Just Go Tips from each article to save you time and help you take action.
Is the green smoothie diet and juice fasting craze healthy or just hype? What a great question answered by Tom in this week’s nutrition article of the week.
Answering a question from a fan about a documentary called “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” (Which I talked about before) Tom dives deep into the topics of the green smoothie diet and this juice fasting craze that seems to be going on.
It’s a long one, but worth the time.

Just Go Tips
- If you are going to try juicing, use it only as a way to consume more fruits and veggies. Using juicing for 60 days like Joe did in the documentary is not something I suggest, but if you find juicing to be an easier way to get fruits and veggies in your diet, then do it.
- Don’t try dieting alone to lose weight. Improving your diet is definitely important if you want to lose weight, but dieting alone leads to muscle loss which makes weight management more difficult in the long run. Be sure to utilize strength training to promote muscle growth.
- Watch the documentary “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” and use it as inspiration to make a change in your life. You can find the documentary on Netflix and I suggest you watch it. Why? To get an understanding of what the human spirit is capable of. I’m not advocating a 60 day juice cleanse, but I know after watching the documentary I was inspired and I think you will be too.

I couldn’t agree more with Tom in regards to this topic. I’ve never been one to juice my fruits and veggies, but I see the value this has for some people.
If juicing is the catalyst to get you to eat your fruits and veggies then great! However, this isn’t the perfect solution many people are making it seem like.
Long term change, like I’ve mentioned many times before, requires changing your habits, not trying out every quick-fix remedy out there.
A key question in regards to quick-fix weight loss plans is this: What are you losing when you lose the weight?
Are you losing fat? Sure.
Are you losing muscle mass? Most likely.
Are you losing water weight? Definitely.
Could you use something like a short term juice fast to jump start your weight loss? Yes, but I’m not a huge fan of it because of the possibility to rebound so quickly.
If you want a jump start, try being extremely strict with your diet at the start and then establish sustainable nutritional principles based around healthy habits that you’ll be able to follow for a lifetime.
What should you do next? Just go!
Choose something you can apply to your life and take action. What have you got to lose?
