Why You Need a Junk Food Budget
Each week I review articles in four categories: fat loss, nutrition, strength training and health and wellness, giving you the Just Go Tips from each article to save you time and help you take action.
Why You Need a Junk Food Budget by Mike Samuels
This article is based on the concept of IIFYM or “If It Fits Your Macros” and the idea that you can have “Bad” foods as long as it fits into a balanced diet.
Essentially, a junk food budget allows for flexible dieting and can help you actually stick to your “diet” in the long term.

Just Go Tips
- Set your junk food budget percentage. Mike’s favorite is the 80:20 ratio – 80% of your calories from nutrient-dense and minimally processed foods. You could also do a 90:10 or 70:30 ratio, but that depends on your goal.
- Track your progress. Pick your junk food budget percentage and actually keep track of it. How many calories should you base it off of? That depends on your goal, but pick a number, see what happens and adjust as needed. You won’t need to track precisely the rest of your life, but do it for the first few weeks at least to get a feel for things.
This was a great article to illustrate the point of eating healthy most of the time.
We tend to put way to much pressure on ourselves when it comes to our diet and having some flexibility makes things much easier.
The main thing I tell my clients is to improve upon where they are currently at. If your diet currently consists of eating nutrient-dense, minimally processed foods only 60% of the time then work on increasing that to 70% then 80% then possibly 90%.
Many people are only getting quality food 50-60% of the time and this simply isn’t good enough to have a healthy diet and get the results you desire.
If there is anything you’ll take away from this article let it be the idea of improving upon where you are currently at. The only way you’ll know if you’re improving is if you track it. So track your eating, improve and get the body and life you desire!
